Library Information

The fictional Carnegie Public Library is going to be based in Olathe, Kansas for this project.  While the City of Olathe has a public library, I did not want their name associated with this website for fear that a patron might not realize this is an assignment and attempt to attend a program.

Olathe is located in the northeast portion of Kansas and functions as the county seat for Johnson County, Kansas.  As of the 2010 U.S. Survey, it  was the fourth most populous city in the Kansas City metropolitan area  with a population of 125,872.

Vital statistics for the community from the 2010 survey include:

  • The median income for a family was $68,498.

  • The racial makeup of the city was 83.1% White, 5.3% African American,
0.4% Native American, 4.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.1% from other
races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were
    10.2% of the population.

  • Of the 44,507 households, 44.1% had children under the age of 18 living with
    them.

  • The average family size was 3.24.

  • The median age in the city was 32.9 years.

    • 30% of residents were under the age of 18

    • 7.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24

    • 32.1% were from 25 to 44

    • 23.1% were from 45 to 64

    • 7.2% were 65 years of age or older

  • The gender makeup of the city was 49.5% male and 50.5% female.

The City of Olathe is serviced by four K-12 school districts: Olathe, Blue Valley, DeSoto, and Spring Hill.  The Olathe School District is the city's largest employer (4,500 employees).  The Olathe School District has approximately 29,622 students enrolled in 35 elementary schools, nine middle schools, and five high schools.  In addition, Olathe is home to MidAmerica Nazarene University and the Kansas State School for the Deaf.
